Daysha | Utah Dance Photographer

“Dancers dream with their feet”

One of my favorite sessions from this year – loved hanging out with Daysha, her sister and her mom while taking Daysha’s portraits. This family is everything creative, fun and energetic. We had such a fun time in the studio coming up with dancing poses for Daysha to do… and wow could she do them! This girl knows her moves and was so strong. She did such a great job holding poses and staying in place. I am not a dancer, but oh how I admire all the dancers out there. It’s so amazing to see someone be so comfortable in their skin and be able to express themselves so beautifully. (I’m the girl in the back of the Zumba class looking like a baboon hoping no one else is watching me!)

Daysha’s mom is an amazing hair stylist and make up artist. She always has the best ideas for shoots. I had been looking out for a good location for this session and I just knew this would be the place. After we did a few shots in the studio I took them to this spot and they instantly fell in love. The weather was so nice and warm and the lighting was that delicious golden glow that fills each photo with life. I couldn’t have asked for a better evening!

LOVE this photo – it looks like’s she’s floating!

Thank you Daysha, Jada and Jodi! I absolutely love working with you girls! Congrats Daysha for making the Olympus High Dance Company!

Beatrix | Utah Lifestyle Newborn Photographer

“You never truly know what love is…until the moment you look in you child’s eyes for the first time…then and there you know love.”

Photographing newborns is one of my favorites. There is something so special about that new little one being held in their parent’s arms. The pure joy and love that is in that new family fills up the room and radiates through their photographs. At  this session the parents asked that I come to their home to photograph their new little family. I love doing sessions on location, especially if that location is connected to the family. Bringing a newborn baby home is a pretty big deal and I love that I as able to capture this time for this darling family in their own home. Baby B was so happy and easy to work with. Mom had a few special items that she had worn as a newborn so we were sure to capture those heirlooms.

When I came back to their house a few weeks later for their session premiere, mom and dad were so excited to see the images. We played the slideshow and soon the tears were flowing. Mom was too cute and had to go grab some tissue, so she could view the proofs and then I think we watched the slideshow one more time:)Baby B had already changed so much in just those few short weeks. The session premiere isn’t only my client’s favorite part of their photo experience, but it’s mine too! I love to hear which images are your favorites and then helping you decide how to display your beautiful works of the hART.

Congratulations to this beautiful family on their new role as proud parents of a happy and healthy baby girl!! I hope this is a wonderful time filled with lots of joy and happiness for your new family. Thanks again for choosing me as your photographer! I truly loved capturing these precious moments.

Salt Lake City Children’s Photographer | Studio Session

These are my three little monkeys. Oh how I just adore and love them to pieces. Last week I went to Seattle for an amazing photography workshop and I was reminded at how important it is to stop and do for myself what I do for others. Don’t worry I’m mighty good at taking lots of photos of my kids, but setting up a studio session, that’s another story. So I set the date, went shopping, made a little pinterest inspiration board and got freaking EXCITED to do this just for me! On the day of our shoot I picked up the kids from school (they normally take the bus, so this was a great surprise) and on top of that I had a bag full of McDonalds… yes the bribing began before I even told them what we were about to go do. My oldest Jack got in the car, looked at the heaps of clothes in the back and said, “are we going to do photos?!” I replied, “Yes!” with a huge grin. Then his whole body folded over and he sighed. Then I brought out the bag of McDonalds and was like, “oh hey I bought you McDonalds and I really want to get some pictures of you with your brother and sister.” Then he smiled and shrugged and said, “Oh, Ok!” Then there no problems and we happily went the studio and had our little portrait party.

Over the years I’ve learned a few tricks on how to keep kids happy on photo day, here is a little rundown of what to do:
1. Make sure they are well rested! A tired kid just isn’t going to feel well.
2. Feed them! Give them a satisfying meal and drink before you go out.
3. Let them wear comfortable clothes, try to give them a few options if you can. When kids feel apart of the fun, they will be more willing to cooperate.
4. As the photographer I like to keep a good stash of Smarties and stickers on hand. These little things do wonders! I’ve had miracles happen with the bribe of a little Smartie:)
5. Always always always bring a little drink/snack to the session. Sometimes they just need a little pick me up.
6. Have fun! At my sessions I try to make it like a play date. We sing songs, play games…I act like a total goofball so parents just ignore my crazyness!
7. Reward them for a job well done. I have darling little gift bags for all of the kids (and parents if you are a kid at heart!) when the session is over. I call it my little party in a bag:)

Ashley | Salt Lake City Maternity Photographer

There is something so beautiful and peaceful about an expecting mother. Maternity photos are truly one of my favorites to do. I love to capture that connection between mother and her unborn child, the anticipation and excitement shows and there is truly a “glow” that shines through the photos.  Pure, honest joy. Moments to remember and look back on.

Ashley was so much fun to work with. Loved hanging out in the studio, coming up with photo ideas and of course talking about baby!

I Loved You From The Start

I loved you from the very start…
You stole my breath, embraced my heart.
Our life together has just begun,
You’re part of me, my little one.

As mother with child, each day I knew
My mind would be filled with thoughts of you.
I’m daydreaming of the things we’ll share,
Like late-night bottles and teddy bears.

Like first steps and skinned knees,
Like bedtime stories and ABC’s.
I’m thinking of things you’ll want to know,
Like how birds fly and flowers grow.

I’ve thought of lessons I’ll need to share,
Like standing tall and playing fair.
When I first see your precious face,
I’ll pray your life be touched with grace.

I’ll thank the angels from above,
And promise you unending love.
Each night I’ll lay you down to sleep,
I’ll gently kiss your head and cheek.

I’ll count your little fingers and toes,
I’ll memorize your eyes and nose.
I will linger at your nursery door,
Awed each day that I love you more.

Through misty eyes, I’ll dim the light,
And whisper, “I love you” every night.
As mother with child our journey’s begun,
My heart’s yours forever, little one.

I loved you from the very start…
You stole my breath, embraced my heart.

Charlotte | Salt Lake City Children’s Photographer

I love all the personality two year olds have! They certainly keep me on my toes during a photo shoot and I honestly absorb every moment! Some people drop their jaws when they find out I would much rather photograph children then photograph a wedding! But it’s the truth! Charlotte and I had a great time in the studio, we read some books, played games and we talked a lot about My Little Pony’s… My own baby girl is two so I know ALL about these important things! Thank you so much Charlotte for coming into the studio. I hope you had a WONDERFUL birthday!

Julie Rivera - Katie, you have such a gift in capturing the essence of your subject, be it a toddler or an expectant mother. The connection you give with the eyes is incredible. So many nuances and moments are captured of this sweet girl…I particularly like the B&W profile shot in the first collage. So sweet!
